Lackluster Oracle Results Wipe Over $70 Billion Off Market Value, Stoking AI Bubble Anxiety.

Oracle's lackluster financial performance have slashed over $70 billion from the value of the enterprise software giant established by billionaire Larry Ellison, heightening escalating fears of a speculative bubble in AI-related stocks.

Sharp Stock Drop Follows Sales Miss

Stock in the company tumbled by 11.5% in after-hours trading after it posted a weaker-than-anticipated 14% growth in sales to $16 billion in the previous quarter, while simultaneously revealed plans to ramp up its AI spending by around $15bn.

The business posted disappointing three-month sales for the period ending in November, with sales at its core cloud computing business growing at a more modest rate than forecast, at 34 percent.

Market Jitters Over Spending and Leverage

Markets were further let down by a more moderate 68% increase in revenues from its infrastructure business.

At the same time, the market were unnerved by the firm's raised forecasts for AI investment. It now expects capex to leap by forty percent to $fifty billion dollars, with the vast majority of the increase aimed at expanding server farms.

This aggressive investment strategy comes amid a ballooning leverage, with Oracle's corporate debt having jumped by 25% over the last twelve months to reach $nearly one hundred billion dollars.

"Frankly, the report was not catastrophic, but it came to validate concerns around heavy AI spending, funded through debt, with an unknown timeline for revenue generation," said a senior analyst.

Wider Sector Repercussions and Industry Concerns

Continued exuberance about the potential of AI technology has fueled a sharp rise in stock prices in recent months, but there has been a rising number of warnings from policymakers and executives who warn equity prices could correct sharply if the market become let down by the progress or commercial uptake of AI solutions.

While Oracle has established itself as a key technology provider developing software for large firms worldwide and has more recently found strength in the cloud sector, analysts point to increasing questions about how reliant tech giants are growing on each other’s financing within the AI ecosystem.

Oracle disclosed that its metric of contractual revenue jumped by 440 percent over the last twelve months. However, market watchers were wary when it was revealed that these commitments were propelled by new commitments from other tech giants like Meta and Amazon.

"While these are high-quality customers, it will not allay concerns that big tech's AI investments are interdependent, which makes the sector vulnerable to a erosion of investor confidence," commented a research director.

"In summary, strong contract growth was not enough to calm anxiety about AI and the huge amount of investment spending required by firms to construct AI infrastructure."

Ripple Effect in Tech Shares

Additional technology stocks also fell in after-hours trading following the Oracle report. Key performers included:

  • Nvidia: Stock fell by 1.3%.
  • Alphabet (Google): Shares declined by 0.3%.
  • SoftBank: In Japan, the investment firm's shares tumbled by 7.7% on Thursday.
